Understanding Charges

Charges fall into two categories: Your daily room rate and charges for ancillary or special services.

The room rate includes the cost of:

  • General nursing care
  • Meals
  • Routine supplies
  • Specialty medical equipment and technology
  • Support services (housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, office functions)

Ancillary services charges include items such as:

  • Lab tests
  • Medications
  • Operating room services
  • X-rays

Certain charges from private doctors are not part of your hospital bill and will not appear on your hospital statement. These costs are billed individually to you or your health insurance company. Separate bills may include fees from your:

  • Anesthesiologist
  • Attending physician
  • Consulting doctor
  • Emergency department doctor
  • Pathologist
  • Private duty nurse
  • Radiologist
  • Surgeon

When You Can Expect To Pay

Your health insurance plan may require that you pay a deductible or co-payment for each hospital admission or service. We usually ask for this payment at the time of service or discharge from the hospital.

We recommend you contact your insurance company to learn about your payment responsibilities. Call the phone number listed on your health insurance card.

If you need to explore payment options, call one of our financial counselors.

At BID Milton we offer monthly payment plans and other medical financial aid if you can’t pay a co-payment or full bill right away.

Surprise / Balance Billing Protection

When you get emergency care or are treated by an out-of-network provider at an in-network hospital, you are protected from balance billing (also called surprise billing). In these cases, you shouldn't be charged more than your plan's co-payment, coinsurance and/or deductible amounts.

You have rights and protections against surprise medical bills. To learn more, see our Balance/Surprise Billing Protection Notice.

Request a Good Faith Estimate

BID Milton is committed to price transparency as part of our mission to provide high-quality, affordable care while complying with federal laws requiring clear and helpful price information be made available to the public.

In some cases, you can ask for a cost estimate of your health care services in advance. This gives you an idea of the cost of your bill. The estimate might include hospital fees, medication costs and medical tests. For more details, refer to our Right to Receive a Good Faith Estimate of Expected Charges Notice.
