Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers support Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital- Milton by giving hundreds of hours to enhance the quality of patient care and to provide support services for the professional staff.  Over 165 adult and junior volunteers are vital members of the hospital’s health care team. 

Adult Volunteer Opportunities

We are currently seeking adult volunteers who can commit to at least 6-12 months of service.  We have specific needs, but are happy to discuss other opportunities.

  • Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays 4-8 pm, greet and answer phone calls for in-patients at main information desk
  • Weekdays 8-12:30 or 12:30-4 p.m. – greet patients and visitors, walk with patients to destinations, make deliveries, walk people in wheelchairs to entryways or outpatient appointments
  • Weekdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – escort patients, prepare equipment, office assignments in Rehabilitative Therapy
  • Weekday and weekend afternoons & evenings, Emergency Department volunteers to deliver coolers to lab, provide comfort care and prepare nursing supply kits.

Additional opportunities include:

  • Emergency Department Concierge – Deliver materials to the lab and support ED staff. Provide comfort measures to patients and family members.
  • Clerical Support – type, file and support department needs.
  • Gift Shop – Interact with a wide array of customers and are responsible for retail sales. 
  • Greeter/ Information Desk - Help visitors find their way around the hospital, answer and transfer patient phone calls.
  • Patient Escorts - Transport patients upon discharge and assist people who need wheelchairs.  Volunteers also run errands and do special projects.
  • Patient Visitors – Caring people who enjoy conversing, visit patients, fill water bottles and alert nursing staff as needed.
  • Pastoral Care-Pastoral care volunteers and Eucharisitic Ministers make initial pastoral care visits, distribute the Eucharist to Catholic patients and provide worship opportunities to patients and their families.  For more information, contact Anne Millington, Chaplain at 617-313-1755.
