The Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton (BID-Milton) Weight Loss Surgery Program has been accredited as a “Comprehensive Center” by the American College of Surgeons Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). This is the highest level of accreditation provided by MBSAQIP and enables BID-Milton to begin offering lap band revisional surgery to patients in Milton.
The accreditation followed a comprehensive onsite review by an MBSAQIP bariatric surgeon surveyor who reviewed the program’s structure, processes and clinical outcomes data last fall. The surveyor determined the program met essential criteria for staffing, training, facility infrastructure and protocols for care, ensuring its ability to support patients with severe obesity.
“The comprehensive center designation is a significant milestone in the growth of the hospital’s Weight Loss Surgery Program,” said Angela Fenton, MA, LMHC, program director. “It ensures patients will receive the highest quality care based on nationally accepted standards pre and post operatively.”
Benjamin Schneider, MD, FACS, medical director of the program, emphasized that more individuals will now be able to receive care at the hospital. “Our new MBSAQIP Comprehensive Center designation means more patients will be able to access a personalized approach to bariatric surgery at a leading conveniently located community hospital. It means patients receive not just a surgical procedure but a full program consisting of multidisciplinary pre-and post-operative care and long-term support, which improves outcomes.”
General and bariatric surgeon Morgan Bresnick, MD, emphasized the need for lap band revisional surgery options locally. “The revisional surgery market is growing. As an MBSAQIP Comprehensive Center, we can now remove a lap band and perform a sleeve or bypass procedure as a replacement right here in Milton.”
BID-Milton and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, members of the Beth Israel Deaconess Bariatric Network, now are both accredited as Comprehensive Centers by MBSAQIP.
BID-Milton offers monthly, free introduction to weight loss surgery programs on the first Tuesday of the month at 12:30 pm and on the third Thursday evening at 6:30 pm in the hospital’s Nangeroni Education Center.
