Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s Spine Center Now at BID-Milton

The Spine Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) has added Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton (BID-Milton) to its locations where patients can receive advanced surgical and non-surgical spine healthcare in a convenient, community location.  BID-Milton is the sixth BIDMC Spine Center location. It is the only hospital location where BIDMC spine surgeons perform surgeries other than at the medical center in Boston.

Spine neurosurgeon Efstathios Papavassiliou, MD, and spine orthopedic surgeon Andrew White, MD, from the BIDMC Spine Center, are co-directors of the Spine Center at BID-Milton. In addition to providing patient evaluations and consultations, they perform many types of spine surgeries and provide follow-up care after surgery at BID-Milton.

Spinal surgical procedures that are performed at BID-Milton include:

  • Decompression, fusion and instrumentation procedures via minimally invasive approaches or traditional open surgery
  • Discectomy
  • Laminectomy

Paragi Rana, MD, and Cyrus Yazdi, MD, pain medicine specialists, are also available in the Spine Center, located in the hospital’s Center for Specialty Care, to provide non-surgical spine care evaluations and consultations as well as spinal injections.

Nurse practitioners Barbara Drottar, APRN, and Emily Derosiers, APRN, are the Center’s nurse practitioners.

“BID-Milton has one of the fastest growing surgery programs in the state, and the transition of the hospital’s Spine Program to a full-fledged BIDMC Spine Center will provide patients and referring physicians with an integrated team of spine and pain medicine specialists close to home,” explained Ashley Yeats, MD, vice president of healthcare quality and clinical integration and chief medical officer at BID-Milton. “Much of the credit goes to Dr. Ronald Birkenfeld, who was instrumental in establishing the Milton program with Drs. Papavassiliou and White more than three years ago.”

Added Kelly Orlando, executive director for ambulatory services at BIDMC: “We are thrilled to offer patients a fully integrated Spine Center at BID-Milton. Patients in Milton, and the surrounding communities, will benefit greatly from our multispecialty team that provides the highest quality spine care, including surgical care, in a convenient top-tier community hospital setting.”

In addition to Boston and Milton, the BIDMC Spine Center has locations in Chelsea, Lexington, Needham and Newburyport.
