Dr. Sheila Ryan Barnett Named Chief Medical Officer at BID-Milton

Dr. Sheila Ryan Barnett has been named Chief Medical Officer at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton, announced hospital President Richard Fernandez.

Dr. Barnett is an anesthesiologist in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and has been Chief of Anesthesiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton for the last four years. She is also an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School.

As Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Barnett will be a member of BID-Milton’s Senior Leadership Team and will be responsible for the overall medical and administrative affairs of the hospital’s Medical Staff, which consists of more than 450 physicians and surgeons. Included in her duties will be the development, implementation and monitoring of standards of clinical practice and the overall integration, coordination and quality of care provided by the Medical Staff.

She will also be responsible for the oversight and direction of the hospital’s Medical Staff Office, Surgical Physician Assistant Program, Hospitalist Program, Quality Department and Pharmacy.

Dr. Barnett graduated medical school from Charing Cross Hospital Medical School in London, England. She completed a residency program in internal medicine at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC and a fellowship in geriatric medicine at the Harvard Medical School Division of Aging. She then completed a residency program in anesthesiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Following her residency program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dr. Barnett helped establish the Society for Geriatric Anesthesia. She has published numerous articles and books on geriatric anesthesia.

While at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dr. Barnett held several multidisciplinary positions, including Chair of the Interventional Procedure Committee, Director of Graduate Medical Education and, most recently, Medical Director of the Transfer Center. She has also served as President of the Massachusetts Society of Anesthesiology and is a Fellow of the American Association of Anesthesiology.
