Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton earns 2021 Leapfrog Top Hospital award for outstanding quality and safety

BID Milton is one of 46 hospitals nationwide to receive the prestigious award

Milton, Mass. – Highlighting its nationally recognized achievements in patient safety and quality, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton (BID Milton) was named a Top General Hospital nationally by The Leapfrog Group. Announced today, the Top Hospital designation is bestowed by The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers recognized as the toughest standard-setters for health care safety and quality.

“We at BID Milton are proud and honored to be recognized by The Leapfrog Group as one of the country’s top hospitals,” says Rich Fernandez, president of BID Milton. “Our clinicians, staff, and leadership are some of the hardest working, compassionate, and safety-conscious professionals you’ll ever meet. Even during the struggles of the pandemic, their dedication never wavered. We are a reflection of our community and we are proud to care for and serve the people of Milton and nearby towns.”

Over 2,200 hospitals were considered for the award. Among those, BID Milton received a Top General Hospital distinction. A total of 149 top hospitals nationwide were selected as Top Hospitals, including:

  • 8 Top Children’s Hospitals
  • 46 Top General Hospitals
  • 23 Top Rural Hospitals
  • 72 Top Teaching Hospitals

The quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, surgery, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication and other errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.

“We are pleased to recognize Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton as a Top Hospital this year,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Even with the continued strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton has demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to excellent health care in the Milton community. We congratulate the board, leadership, staff and clinicians who put their patients first.”

In addition to receiving the Leapfrog Top Hospital award, BID Milton has earned an “A” grade two times in a row for its continued commitment to patient safety in the Fall 2021 Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group. The ratings signify how well hospitals protect patients from preventable harm, including medical errors, injuries and infections within the hospital.

To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety.
