Together, We’re Providing Better Care

Milton Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center first began collaborating in 2003.

Milton Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center first began collaborating in 2003.  Since that time, the two institutions have introduced many clinical programs that provide local access to the kind of care commonly seen only in the largest city medical centers.  Here are some examples:

Rapid Cardiac Transfer
The Rapid Cardiac Transfer program provides specialized care and an immediate transfer of certain cardiac patients from Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital - Milton to BIDMC’s all-digital catheterization lab. The cardiac catheterization laboratory at BIDMC is designed for patients undergoing coronary angiography, angioplasty, stent placement and other emergency cardiac procedures.

Cardiologists at both hospitals have developed joint protocols and procedures for patient care to ensure a smooth transition. Here's how it works - a patient arrives at our emergency department showing signs of a heart attack. Immediately they are assessed and treated at BID-Milton. From there, doctors determine the severity of the attack, and patients showing signs of major attacks will be stabilized and transferred from BID-Milton’s emergency department to Beth Israel Deaconess, bypassing their triage process.

The behind-the-scenes process of contacting Beth Israel Deaconess in advance with the patient assessment is a key part of this program.

The Geriatrics Program, under the leadership of Virginia Cummings, MD, emphasizes communication and links between seniors and the health care system, with the goal of enhancing the quality of care provided to senior citizens in the community. The program helps provide peace of mind that a family’s loved one is being cared for properly in a senior care setting.

In addition to helping to enhance care at local senior facilities, Dr. Cummings and her staff consult with inpatients at BID-Milton for geriatric issues including delirium, evaluation of frail elderly before surgery, management of medically complex elderly, depression, dementia, medication management, nutrition, palliative care and functional decline.

Emergency Care
BID-Milton launched a partnership with Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians (HMFP) at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to operate the Emergency Department - a move that immediately resulted in shorter wait times during peak hours. The group brings with it the experience of treating in a major city emergency facility and offers new perspectives on improving care and service.

Cardiovascular Health
Several BID-Milton physicians share an affiliation with the CardioVascular Institute (CVI) at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, an innovative center that delivers documented, superior outcomes and better service to cardiovascular patients.

Prostate Health
Together with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Milton’s Mass Bay Urologic Associates, BID-Milton offers brachytherapy, the implantation of radioactive seeds into the prostate that internally release a three-month dose of radiation.

This form of treatment enables a patient to receive a higher dose of radiation than one can receive using traditional methods. The procedure only takes one hour, and for some patients, is an alternative to radical surgery, in which the prostate is completely removed. Brachytherapy treatment produces a low incidence of catheterization and lower incidence of impotence or incontinence than surgery can causes. Only light anesthesia is required, and overnight hospital stays are not normally necessary.

Electronic Medical Record

An Electronic Medical Record system is being implemented for participating BID-Milton physicians.  Using this connection, Milton clinicians can view BIDMC’s web-based online medical records right from their own local offices, and BIDMC clinicians can view Milton data in their own system.

This connection provides current BIDMC patients the opportunity to remain close to home for appropriate community-level care and still be linked to BIDMC for tertiary care.  Our patient record connections facilitate easier coordination of care between the two hospitals and with our physicians.

Health Care Quality
BID-Milton has an active collaboration with BIDMC for health care quality, focusing on continual improvement in the outcomes of patient care.  In addition, BIDMC and BID-Milton jointly employ a Chief Medical Officer dedicated to Milton, with tight linkages to BIDMC’s Department of Health Care Quality.

Better Access to Primary Care
With support from BIDMC, BID-Milton now offers greater access to primary care physicians in Milton and surrounding areas. With further combined recruitment efforts planned, BID-Milton will offer access to even more primary care physicians and  more types of medical specialists in the community.
