Robotic Gynecologic Oncology Surgery Performed at BID-Milton

A milestone was recorded at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton (BID-Milton) recently when two gynecologic oncology operations were performed using a surgical robot. This is the first time in the hospital’s history that a gynecologic oncology procedure was conducted using a surgical robot.

Leslie Garrett, MD, a gynecologic oncology surgeon on staff at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton, performed the operations.

BID-Milton dramatically expanded its robotic surgery program last spring. The hospital now has seven surgeons on staff, including four from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, performing robotic surgery at the hospital. Medical conditions being treated at the hospital with robot-assisted surgery include prostate cancer, pelvic floor prolapse, and certain cervical and endometrial cancers. Hysterectomies, or removal of the ovaries, are also being performed using robotic surgery.

“The hospital and its partner, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, have invested substantial resources to make BID-Milton a community hospital surgical center of excellence,” said Ashley Yeats, MD, vice president of healthcare quality and clinical integration and chief medical officer at BID-Milton. “Our affiliation with the medical center has brought new surgical specialties to Milton. Patients can often receive the same surgical care as in Boston but in a location closer to where they live.”

Added Dr. Garrett: “The surgeries were a big success, and the patients and their families were thrilled that they did not need to travel into Boston.  Everything was seamless and perfectly executed. I am looking forward to expanding my surgical practice at BID-Milton to allow patients the opportunity to have their care closer to home.”

In addition to performing surgery at BID-Milton, Dr. Garrett, a Milton resident, has outpatient office hours in the Milton Women’s Health office of obstetrician and gynecologists Dr. Alice Shin and Dr. Huma Farid, located in the Medical Office Building next to the hospital. Milton Women’s Health telephone number is (617) 754-0500.
